Global Entry Temporarily Suspended:

What You Need to Know

Update as of 24 Feb 2026:

TSA PreCheck operations have been restored as of now, but this could change at any time. Please follow the news, and we will also report changes here as they occur.

Today, travelers are facing a significant shift in airport operations as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) expands its suspension of services. Beyond the initial pause of Global Entry, the agency has officially halted TSA PreCheck nationwide. These changes took effect at 6:00 a.m. ET this morning, marking a major escalation in the ongoing funding crisis.

Global Entry Suspended

Beyond Global Entry: What Else Is Affected?

The disruption is not limited to frequent flyer programs. The DHS has implemented several emergency measures to redirect its remaining personnel toward general security and customs processing:

  • TSA PreCheck Lanes Closed: All travelers—including those with active memberships—are now required to use standard security lines. Dedicated lanes and expedited screening (such as keeping shoes on or electronics in bags) are no longer available.
  • Suspension of Special Escorts: The DHS has officially suspended all "courtesy and special privilege escorts." This includes airport police escorts and expedited processing typically provided to members of Congress and their families.
  • FEMA Limitations: The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is also halting all non-disaster-related activities to focus exclusively on immediate emergencies, particularly with a severe winter storm currently moving through the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

Why Is This Happening?

This suspension is a direct result of the partial government shutdown that began on February 14. The shutdown was triggered by a legislative impasse regarding immigration enforcement reforms.

The core of the conflict involves demands from congressional leaders for new restrictions on federal law enforcement following a recent controversial incident involving federal agents in Minneapolis. Negotiations between the White House and Congress failed to reach a deal before the funding deadline, leaving the DHS with limited resources. By pausing "trusted traveler" programs and congressional perks, the agency says it is prioritizing the safety and processing of the general traveling public during a period of severe staffing and funding strain.

Impact for Travelers

For the millions of Americans and international visitors who rely on these services, the impact is immediate:

  • Significantly Longer Wait Times: Expect much slower moving lines at both security checkpoints and customs.
  • Resource Shifting: Officers previously assigned to Global Entry and PreCheck kiosks are being reassigned to manual processing to help manage the increased congestion in standard lanes.
  • Logistical Challenges: With the added pressure of a major winter storm causing flight cancellations across the country, travelers should arrive at the airport several hours earlier than usual and monitor official travel advisories closely.
