Military History Sites
London has many opportunities to see
attractions dedicated to the military and it's history. For example,
the Imperial
War Museum in London covers both World Wars and has an
extensive collection of everything relating to the battles, including
tanks, aircraft, guns, recordings, and detailed historic information.
There is even a bomb shelter that simulates a WW II bombing.
Many other sites are included in your London Pass - here are some of the best:
The Guards Museum in London is located at
Wellington Barracks, the HQ for the British Army's 5 Guards Regiments.
Because it is located down the street from Buckingham Palace you can
not only see the museum, you can also go outside and watch the changing
of the guard. The museum traces their history for almost 400 years,
gives good insight into the life of a guardsman, and includes dioramas
and a fabulous assortment of regimental drums.
The Cabinet War Rooms in London have been
carefully preserved to take you back to the days when Churchill ran his
war cabinet from there as the bombs rained down on London. Recordings
let you hear the great man as you observe the area in which he directed
the war effort. There is a new Winston Churchill museum as well.
HMS
Belfast served throughout the Second World War, playing a
leading part in the destruction of the battle cruiser Scharnhorst and
also in the Normandy Landings. In service with the Royal Navy until
1965, she was saved for the nation in 1971 as a unique reminder of
Britain’s naval heritage. She is currently available for
touring docked in the River Thames near the Tower Bridge.
Britain
at War Experience located near London Bridge on the south
bank, Tooley Street, will take you back to Britain in WWII. Experience
what they did with the sights, sounds and smells of the Blitz.
Another interesting site is the Royal
Air Force Museum, recently celebrating 100 years of flight
with a special exhibit. Here you can see over 80 aircraft, countless
memorabilia and artifacts a simulator, sound and light show, and
interactive displays. While the museum is free, your London Pass will give you a free simulator
ride and 10% discount at the gift shop.
